My 5 Fave Hair & Beauty products

1. Cold-pressed Coconut Oil – This is for both hair and beauty. I use it as lotion, sometimes alone (right when I get out of the shower), and other times mixed with a regular lotion or shea butter. I also use it as a pre-shampoo treatment and add it to my deep conditioners for my hair, sort of as a light protein treatment. In addition, I use it to shave my under-arms and legs. It leaves the skin soft and moisturized. I also used to use it when I did oil pulling. I’m really inconsistent with that, but I know a lot of people have had great results with it.

2. Clarisonic – My clarisonic cleanser is the only “tool” I use on my face. Some people have a love/ hate relationship with it. I use it a few times a week, not daily, because I don’t want to trigger a break-out. I use it when I’m oil cleansing, or when I’m using regular face washes or scrubs. I also use it on my neck and chest, and it’s most especially helpful when I’m filming because it’s the only thing that gets all the studio make-up off my face.

 3. Black soap – I use Black Soap with Lavender from Inner Beautee, a Nigerian company. I’ve also used black soap with Lemongrass from Namaste Organics, another Nigerian company. I like both of these because my skin can be sensitive and dry out quite quickly, so they’re milder than the normal “Dudu Osun.” I alternate this with a body wash with salicylic acid in it, like Neutrogena body wash/scrub.

4. Nail polish – I’m a nail polish junkie. I went through a phase where a month wouldn’t go by without me buying 5 or more bottles of nail polish. I’ve calmed down quite a bit now, but I still have a lot of polish. I almost always take my own bottle to the nail salon, or just do them myself at home. My nails are natural, so after a few days of regular household chores, they chip, no matter what topcoat is on them, so I’d rather use my own polish and repaint as needed.

5. Shea Moisture Castor Oil Hair Lotion – In furtherance of preserving my edges, cuz we all know how important they are, I’ve been using this for a while, and I like how it doesn’t weigh my fine hair down. Now that I have short hair, I tend to experiment more with stuff, but I like how this hair conditioner smells, and it’s not thick, like castor oil, so I can use it every other day and it doesn’t make my hair all limp and weighed down.

Best beauty advice I’ve received: Drink plenty of water. I don’t always do this, but when I do, I almost always see an immediate improvement in my skin, especially on my face, and even my scalp. For my hair, some really good advice is: Just leave it alone! A lot of times, we over-comb, over-wash, over-treat it with products and oils and such. Sometimes, the best thing to do is to do the bare minimum, eat well and let it thrive instead of being product junkies and overloading it with too much stuff.
