Hi Ladies, I got this email from a reader about apricot scrub for Acneic skin.

Hello mHB, I love your blog, I saw a post about “ask an esthetician” and I wanted to know if its okay to use Apricot Scrub for my pimples, a friend of mine recommended it to me and told me that it helped clear her skin, what do you think? and if not what scrubs do you recommend I use for my pimples? (Teju, Lagos)

-On of the great things about my job is that I get to analyze clients faces, discuss their skincare regimen and recommend products for them. A major thing I’ve noticed in Lagos is that a lot of women use the wrong products for their skin condition!  I’m sure you’ve seen and probably used St. Ives Apricot Scrubs, it is one of the most raved about beauty products, even TV Personality Eku Edewor swears by it, however if you battle with Acne (big cystic acne) you should stay AWAY from this product.

Alot of women have this mentality that Beauty= Pain, and if “it is not Hurting, then its not working“, but this is NOT TRUE. If you love your skin (which I’m sure you do), you need to realize that “Less is More“.

What are Facial Scrubs and Who are they for?

– Facial scrubs like the St. Ives Apricot Scrub are physical exfoliants, like all physical exfoliants they help polish the skin, and rid it of already dead skin cell hanging there. Exfoliating the skin is really important, however EXFOLIATION does not always mean SCRUBBING. There are two types of exfoliations, physical and chemical. Physical exfoliation means using scrubs like sugar, salt, apricot scrub or even brushes like Clarisonic, while chemical exfoliation means using Alpha or Beta hydroxy products or getting a chemical peel.  For skin types that have active pimples (of all shapes) a chemical exfoliant will be a better option, because it loosens dead skins without causing irritation to the skin. Using a physical exfoliants like Apricot scrub on acne and inflamed skin is BAD because the scrubs tear the skin, spreading bacteria and causing MORE inflammation. So if you’ve adopted this bad habit, you need to stop and change products.
